It's something that's being largely chalked up to a ripple effect of the "Awaken the Dragon" screening at the Beaufort International Film Festival  last month: a group of locals are now working to bring Dragon Boat races to Beaufort.

The competitions of 20-person crews are often raise money for cancer patient services and offer a chance for cancer patients and survivors to compete to raise fitness and mental spirits.

Learn more about the effort behind the push in this article at The Island Packet and connect with the group on their Facebook page — there will also be another showing of "Awaken the Dragon" at the USCB Center for the Arts on Saturday, April 21, at 5 p.m.

With the high cost of the boats being a main issue in hosting the event in Beaufort, one has to wonder if there isn't someone in our town with a rich boating history and emerging art culture that could step up.

We'll keep you posted as this effort evolves.
