The Beaufort District Collection published an interesting
historical profile on their website today about Confederate black soldiers and their
pensions.

The site links to some historical texts which catalogue
the numbers of and names of the confederate African Americans who applied for
pensions in the post war United States. According to Act No. 63, S.C. Acts 107
effected in 1923, African Americans who had served at least six months as
cooks, servants, or attendants were eligible to apply for a pension.
