Port Royal Elementary School celebrating 100 years on Saturday

Saved from the Beaufort County Board of Education chopping block, Port Royal Elementary School now has its sights set on celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The celebration will be held September 24 at the school, kicking off at 3 p.m.

The organizing committee is inviting all community members, especially former students, to attend for tours, chatting, and tasty nibbles. And they ask that people bring their Port Royal Elementary photos and other pieces of history with them to share for the day.

Island Packet columnist David Lauderdale has written a short column praising the school's history and present day achievements and opines that, "Somewhere during the long voyage of the Port Royal Elementary School Mariners, America veered away from small neighborhood schools. And we have the test scores to prove it." Read his piece here.

And don't forget to stick around as the Port Royal street music installment starts at 6 on Saturday.
