Alert issued after high levels of mercury found in cobia (update: perspective, energy policy)

Update May 24: With the Beaufort County's highly-prized cobia fish on mercury watch list, there's been understandable concern.

And with that in mind The Island Packet has written a pretty solid editorial that puts the warning into perspective (hint: it's not the end of world for enjoying the fishing of cobia, nor even eating them) and the paper reminds that anger should not be directed at S.C. DHEC for issuing the warning, but rather at what caused the problem (hint: we're meandering into energy policy debate.)

At any rate, read the editorial over here.

First reporting May 18: Cobia, a native fish found off much of the eastern coast, has been found to have a concerning amount of mercury contained within it, prompting the Department of Health and Environmental Control to issue a warning against consuming it in large quantities.

The warning is not, however, believed to play a major role in affecting the popularity of the fish among residents, according to a number of fisherman featured in an article The State issued in their Wednesday, May 18 edition of the paper.

There's been a ton of coverage of DHEC's findings, here's The State's article or check out the Post and Courier's article here.
