Get your thoughts heard on improving crosswalks in Beaufort

Following Saturday night's injury of two pedestrians trying to cross Carteret Street at the Port Republic Street crosswalk there's been a lot of talk in the town about how the intersection can be improved and where thoughts can be directed.

First though, a point of clarification, it's important recognize that Carteret Street is the U.S. 21 Business Route and as such it's harder to put "state law yield" signs like those on Bay Street in crosswalks. But there are other traffic calming options, like flashing lights, traffic lights, crossing lights, and visually attracting "zebra" crossings.

But if you'd like to make your voice heard there's no better place than to voice your opinion at a Beaufort City Council meeting during public comments, look for the next meeting to be February 8.

Second best, and a complementary action, is to write your thoughts. Write them on Facebook, write them below, and write them to publications.

Few folks tend to speak and write their council person, so 10 minutes of your time can make a big difference.
