Updates at the bottom.

Helen Harvey, wife of former Lt. Gov. Brantley Harvey, passed away today, according to S.C. Sen. Tom Davis, who also is a partner at Harvey & Battey law firm in Beaufort.

The Harveys long have been a staple of the Beaufort community. City officials named a downtown park after Helen and Brantley Harvey in 2009. You can read the archived Island Packet editorial about that naming here.

Helen Harvey was born in Darlington in 1933, the third child of James Warren and Grace Beard Coggeshall.

She also was named the 1999 South Carolina Mother of the Year.

Helen Harvey had served on the University of South Carolina's board of trustees. We will update with obit info and services as we see it.

Update September 2: The Island Packet has followed with a traditional write-up about Helen Harvey, her life, and Beaufort involvement; read it here.
