Update May 4: A closing chapter update to note that while officials are still unsure how the brush fire started, there is suspicion of fireworks.

First reporting: A brush fire on Lemon Island caused major traffic delays for commuters on S.C. 170 between Beaufort and Hilton Head on Wednesday.

Sparked by dry and windy conditions the fire closed down much of the road from 3 p.m. until the early evening as firefighters worked to contain the flames from jumping across the highway.

Things should be in the clear for this morning's drive, but we'll be sure to update you if that changes and the blaze starts back up.
