Take in some of the Lowcountry's great spring weather and be part of a great national event this weekend, and all for free.

Starting Saturday, April 21, and going until Sunday the 29th, admission to all national parks around the country will be free during National Park Week.

Sadly, there are no such parks in the immediate Beaufort area, but we couldn't think of a better reason for a road trip. Get out of town and explore the great state of South Carolina, all of its natural beauty, and rich history.

There will be special events and activities including Volunteer Day on April 21, Earth Day on April 22, and Junior Ranger Day on April 28. From ranger-led hikes and kayak trips to camping and exploring, park visitors can plan their National Park Week at

And, don't forget that just across the Savannah River is the Fort Pulaski National Monument.

The United States National Parks Service is offering the free admission not just this coming weekend but throughout the year.

And mark your calendar for these fee-free dates in 2012:

  • June 9: Get Outdoors Day
  • September 29: National Public Lands Day
  • November 10-12: Veterans Day weekend
