Kate Cerve of The Island Packet has a feature article in the March 14 edition of the newspaper about Robert Smalls Middle School's Saturday school program.

According to the article, recent studies conducted by the Beaufort County Board of Education and others have found that increasing the number of hours "high-poverty schools" are open correlates to more academic success for students and lower drop-out rates. As a result, the district this year decided to keep the school open for an extra 20 days to help those not meeting grade-level standards on state wide exams.
