The Post and Courier has an inspiring piece on the Charleston Volunteers for Literacy's 'Book Buddies' program dedicated to to improving students' reading skills.
Charleston Book Buddies is a one-on-one tutorial program for first and second grade students. Its goal is to help ensure that the students it tutors read at grade level by the end of the year. During the 45 minute tutoring sessions, a reading specialist observes and works with the tutor and child pairs so there is plenty of expert support if it's needed.
This year, the volunteers are working with 80 students in five different schools. Last year, Book Buddies tutors logged a whopping 3,360 hours with students.
