Let's talk Spoleto Festival USA.

The annual mixed-art festival is storming the Holy City from May 28th - June 13th and is offering a plethora of exciting performances, lectures, art and culture. It is hard to wrap your head around it all ahead of time, so we're here to offer some insight into some of the most unique and exciting shows that this year's Spoleto has to offer.

Kicking off our "must see" list is I Can See Myself In Your Pupil, to be performed by Gallim Dance.

The New York City based company, under the choreography of Andrea Miller will bring their fiercely physical, sensual, and hypnotic show to the Memminger Auditorium's stage for four very special performances. Miller combines her influence from her work in Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company with her own originality, humor and daring.

A review of the show from The Brooklyn Rail had this to say:

Miller, a Juilliard graduate, has danced for the past three years with Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company. Her movement vocabulary, which juxtaposes athletic explosiveness with articulate, dancerly variations on everyday movements, is plainly influenced by the work of Batsheva director Ohad Naharin. And like Naharin, Miller is endearingly unpretentious, cutting moments of thick seriousness with humor. But Miller is more theatrical than her former mentor. While Naharin’s works look deliberately unaffected, as if his dancers woke up moving that way, Miller’s dancers are self-consciously putting on a show. I Can See Myself In Your Pupil feels like a cabaret: it is performed, to an audience and for an audience.

So not only is the dancing great, but so is the music. The dances are set to a score incorporating the Israeli band Balkan Beat Box, Chris Clark and even Puccini.

You can catch performances of I Can See Myself In Your Pupil on May 28th, May 29th and May 31st. Visit Spoleto Festival USA's page for show times and tickets.

We will be back again tomorrow for another installment of our Spoleto Festival "must see" list. Stay tuned.
