The City of Charleston, Office of Cultural Affairs and the City Gallery at Waterfront Park are proud to host a new exhibit by Washington D.C. based artist, Rik Freeman.

The Chittlin Circuit Review will feature twenty-five paintings by the artist on the history of the blues in segregated America. Freeman began the series in 1990, and now brings his vibrant and inspiring work to the City Gallery.

Freeman's paintings follow the history of the blues through cotton fields, juke joints, railroads, and jazz clubs. The paintings include a number of vivid characters like Freeman's fictionalized jazz musicians, Mud Paw Willie and Critter Gitter, as they travel the Chittlin Circuit, where black entertainers could perform during segregation.

This beautiful exhibit of Freeman's work reflects the rhythm and movement at the heart and soul of blues music.

An opening reception will be held on January 29th from 6 to 8 p.m. and an artist's lecture will follow on January 30th.
