Nine days of creative fun at the North Charleston Arts Festival (updated)

First reporting:

North Charleston's 2009 Arts Festival offers nine days of cultural events, programs, visual, and performance arts beginning on Friday, May 1st.

If you think you might go to one of the dozens of events, know that you'd be in the good company of some 30,000 that attend each year.

The main event will be held on Saturday and Sunday at North Charleston's Performing Arts Center and Convention Center. It's from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. -- However, there's much, much more to do at the festival.

Here are some directions, and be sure to check out the full events calendar below -- or use this handy, print-and-go version.Admission and parking is free to more than 40 local, regional, and national performances on four themed stages: Cultural Heritage, Youth Entertainment, Youth and General Audiences.

Featured exhibits include SC Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Exhibit, youth art from Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester County students; the Lowcountry Gem & Mineral Show; Children's Activities at Box City and Creation Stations; Art and Craft booths; and an Outdoor Food Court.

The Festival will continue throughout the week with over 50 events throughout North Charleston. An exciting array of free and ticketed events include street dances/block parties, a murder-mystery dinner theater, concerts, kid's events, films, theater performances, workshops, an Art Walk, Fine Art and Craft Co-Op, Sculpture competition and exhibit and Grand Finale at Riverfront Park.

The Grand Finale, starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday will include children's activities, performances by school and community groups, hula hoops from Homespun Hoops, food, an evening concert featuring Billy Scott & the Party Prophets, and fireworks. You can catch celebrity actress, Tamika Harper, from Tyler Perry's latest movie "Madea" at the poetry show!

The festival, in its 25th year, started out as a small community event in Park Circle and is no considered one of the most comprehensive arts festivals in the region.

THURSDAY, MAY 7

Children's Puppet Show: “Mother Goose & Friends”

Visit the North Charleston Farmer's Market and enjoy a Traditional & Early Country music performance by North Carolina-based international touring artists Laura Boosinger & Josh Goforth from 4-6 p.m. Laura's sparkling vocals and melodic clawhammer banjo combine with Josh's spectacular prowess on fiddle, guitar and mandolin to present the finest in traditional music. The market offers an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce, and features art & craft booths, food vendors, and entertainment.

Community Arts Event: Baraza Arts

The public is invited to participate in North Charleston Elementary School's 2nd annual arts celebration for the community, Baraza Arts. Community art projects will be held throughout the evening and student art work will be on exhibit. See musical performances by the Pepperhill Elementary Choir, Morning Side Middle School Band, Charleston County Strings Program, North Charleston Elementary School performers, and Adande African Drum and Dance Ensemble.

Theater Presentation: “The Soul of Langston”

Daron Stewart stars in this one man play fused with jazz, blues, poetry and story that journeys through the life and work of Harlem Renaissance poet, Langston Hughes. In a study room, Langston reflects on his childhood, his most signature poems, and his notable achievements through his writings. The event will also feature an exhibition of original paintings and poetry by Clyde Washington of the Inspirational Art Gallery. Washington, who grew up in Liberty Hill in North Charleston, now lives in New York.

Hispanic Concert w/ Grupo Renovacion

The public is invited to attend this concert, which will present a mix of traditional Mexican songs and South American tunes. This performance is offered in conjunction with Community Connections.

Dwight Kemper, Master of Mystery and published mystery novelist, will host an interactive presentation of the zany mystery, “Murder in Mind.” Participants become deranged mental patients with unique phobias who all feel compelled to confess to the murder of their psychiatrist. Comic fun ensues as the mystery is solved. Seating is limited. Ticket packages include dinner, performance, gratuity, and parking pass.

FRIDAY, MAY 8

Senior Outreach Dance w/ Come Dance with Me

The Come Dance with Me Line Dance Team will perform several line dances and encourage both residents and visitors to join in on the fun.

Olde Village Block Party w/ 17 South Band

With three horn arrangements, 17 South delivers a huge and classy sound ranging from Motown and R&B covers to classic beach music and Top 40 hits. The band is a handpicked, all-star group of musicians from Charleston, SC that have played with everybody from The Temptations and Four Tops to Frank Sinatra and

Tony Bennett. Enjoy shag demonstrations by the Charleston Shag Club and dance the night away.

Reggae Block Party w/ Mystic Vibrations

Hot off the success of its sold out run earlier this year, “The Magical Mystery Tour” is a journey through the massive songbook of The Beatles, featuring stunning dance interpretations of classics including “Lady Madonna,” “Yellow Submarine,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Penny Lane”, along with a set list of over 20 more Beatles hits. Following the performance, guests will be treated to a live Beatles rock concert in the PAC lobby, performed by local guitar hero Eddie Bush and the band One Flew South.

Quilt & Fiber Art Workshop & Lecture

Local quilt and fiber artist, Cookie Washington, will explore and discuss the “divine feminine” in quilting in this two hour workshop and lecture.

Spring Carnival

The public is invited to attend Morningside Middle's PASS Spring Carnival. Attractions include a dunking booth, games, jump castles, and an appearance by Charlie the River Dog. Enjoy performances by Pantasia Steel Band (11:30 a.m.) and Adande African Drum & Dance (12:30 p.m.). In addition, community representatives from the North Charleston Fire and Police departments will be present to offer safety tips.

Reggae Concert w/ Dream Merchants Reggae Youth Band

Relax at the cabana area and listen to the smooth sounds of reggae played by this young group of local musicians, ages 8 to 16. Their performance, titled “Youth Selling a Dream,” will feature covers and original compositions.

Art Quilt Trunk Show & Lecture

Local quilt artist, Dr. Marlene O'Bryant-Seabrook, weaves powerful stories and images into her quilts, which have been exhibited around the world. Join her for a trunk show of her unique creations and a lecture titled “The Journey of an 'Out of the Box' Fiber Artist.”

Master storyteller Tim Lowry will host “Mayfest: a Medieval Fair” from 6-7:15 p.m., featuring stories of knights' adventures, “tournament” games, a marionette show, and a Maypole. See “The Poetry Show” at The Navy Base Memorial from 6-8:30 p.m., featuring “Madea Goes to Jail” actress, Tamika Harper (aka Georgia Me), Abyss, from BET's “Somebodies,” and local spoken word poets, including Los the Host, Khalid, Marcus Amaker, Chyrra, and Jaha Knight. Look for a presentation of American tribal style belly dance by Callypso Rising Tribal Bellydance Troupe from 7:30-8 p.m. At 8 p.m., multi-Cammy award winning variety band, Billy Scott & the Party Prophets, will present an exciting evening concert. The group, featuring Beach Music Hall of Fame inductee Billy Scott, will get the crowd dancing with beach, blues, Motown, and oldies tunes. The evening concludes with a fabulous fireworks display over the Cooper River at 9 p.m. Bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy a great ending to this year's Arts Festival! This action packed duo show features astonishing stunts and memorable moments wrapped up into one hilarious presentation. Take a stroll down East Montague Avenue through businesses, pubs, cafes, studios, and salons to see works by local artists. The Josh Padgett Quartet (jazz) and musician Pete Ledbetter (acoustic Piedmont blues, folk, and swing) will provide outdoor entertainment throughout the evening. Enjoy live demonstrations of various graffiti art techniques, including wheat pasting, aerosol art, and stencil art, by local artists including Meta, Proton, Egroe, and House. Blues Music Concert w/ Mojo Collins

Join this dedicated musician and master guitarist for an evening of original Blues music. Mojo Collins has performed all over the country for 20 years and has released numerous albums. He has played with and opened for several well-known musicians including Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, Steve Miller, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Ike and Tina Turner, Muddy Waters, Sly & the Family Stone, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, just to name a few.

Jeff Robbins keeps America's richest musical tradition alive with a performance featuring the upbeat folk sounds of the southern Appalachians. Many of the instruments he plays to create this “mountain music” are crafted from his own hands.

Kim Lhuillier and Tom Dittrich bring a combined 45 years of music training and performance to the acoustic duo, Kim & Tom. Contra Dance w/ The Charleston Folk Club

17th century English country dance steps taken up by French court dancers were called contra-dance or contredanse, and have spread throughout the western world to be associated with American folk dances. Learn the basics of this dance during an instructional session from 7-7:30 p.m. Caller Kenny Greer, from Myrtle Beach, SC, will then guide new and experienced dancers alike through a variety of dances to live music by Anna's Bananas.

Black Book Session & Art Exhibit: 'The Nano Show'

'The Nano Show' features contemporary works in a variety of mediums and subjects created by several local artists and high school students. As the title of the exhibit suggests, all of the pieces are created on a small scale - none exceeding a square foot. A black book session will take place throughout the evening, allowing artists and visitors the opportunity to swap and draw in one another's black books (sketchbooks). The event also features live drawing by local artists such as Meta, Philip Hyman, Tim Showers, Justin Cammer, Proton, and Christina Rodino.

Theater Presentation: “Broadway Broads”

Join two Deuce Theatre company members for an unconventional and entertaining cabaret-style show. The audience will be led towards a shared experience of experimental theater through show-tunes, original material, and audience participation. A number of songs are from familiar shows such as Follies, A Chorus Line, Chicago, Fiorello, and Kiss Me Kate. Original material includes songs from Deuce Theatre's, “The Emperor is Naked?” as well as a preview of a new original production scheduled to open in October 2009. This stage play pays tribute to the life of legendary singer and actress Ethel Waters, who achieved many “firsts” during her seven decade career. Learn science through the choreography of this dance performance titled “Science in Motion.” The four Kinetyx dancers will teach lessons on interdependence of life forms, life cycles, simple machines, and the Laws of Motion.
