For this week's Rare Beer Tuesday, the Charleston Beer Exchange squad is throwing the second beer in Rogue Ales' John John series on the growler station at 5 p.m. -- John John Juniper.
Rogue Ales teamed up with Rogue Spirits to create the John John series, aptly named after both the brewmaster and the master distiller. It's an interesting exercise in aging Rogue beers in Rogue Spirits barrels, each of which used to house liquors whose recipes were inspired by that same beer. Leave it to Rogue to come up with something clever, yet weirdly incestuous.
John John Juniper in particular is their existing Juniper Pale Ale aged in Spruce Gin oak barrels. By the numbers, it's a tame 5.2% ABV with a B from BeerAdvocate and an 83 from Ratebeer.
As a craft beer fanatic who still enjoys the occasional G&T, this combination sounds both fancy and tantalizing. Throw in the possibility of a free Rogue temporary tattoo (while supplies last), and things get downright hard to refuse.
Charleston Beer Exchange abides at 14 Exchange Street downtown.
