On Saturday, October 1st 2011, the Walk-to-Cure Diabetes will take place at the Grand Park at Market Common. All money raised will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
The walk is a one-mile path around the lake at Grand Park, as well as a three-mile route if you prefer. Bring friends to walk with you and help find a cure for children who battle this Type 1 diabetes every day. Registration is at 10:00 a.m., and the walk starts at 11:00 a.m. The theme this year is “Bridge to a Cure!”
There will be fun activities for the entire family including face painting, balloons, bouncy castles, and a free lunch for all volunteers and walk teams. Splash the Pelican will also be in attendance and there will be surprises and giveaways.
Forty children a day are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The JDRF not only donates more money than any other organization toward finding a cure, they also give out “Bags of Hope” to local children who are newly diagnosed. These backpacks have childrens’ books in them about life with diabetes as well as Rufus the bear who also has diabetes, and children can practice giving shots on Rufus.
