Charleston Fashion Week - Get to Know Local Designers

In this years Charleston Fasion Week Emerging Designer compeition there are quite  a few local designers. TheDigitel took some time to get to know them.

Get to Know Local Designer: Veritee Hill

Born in England, this Emerging Designer attended high school in Charleston. Upon admission to the 2011 Emerging Designers competition for Charleston Fashion Week, Hill moved back to Mount Pleasant and splits her time between here and New York. Her line is: Veritee Hill.

What’s Your Style? Classic with an edge. I take from different periods, the 20’s, the 30’s, the 40’s. Sophistication with a twist, in the form of embellishments and fabrics.

Favorite Designer? John Galliano

Where do you go to be inspired in Charleston? Cypress Gardens for the swamps, trees, and wildlife. Historic downtown as well, for the architecture of the buildings.

What will we see on the runway? I was inspired by les fleur de mal poetry. Lady of the Flowers is the theme to my collection. Hand painted, hand made flowers. Feminine and pretty, but strong and edgy. I like to complete the look with a hat, it adds an element to the outfit.

Favorite Local Location? I love Rue de Jean and Cypress Gardens.

*Congratulations to Veritee Hill who was the chosen designer of the evening to advance to the final round on Saturday.

Get to Know Local Designer: Mary Labberton

Born in Charleston, SC Mary Labberton pursued her BFA in Fashion Design at Savannah College of Art & Design. Labberton returned to Charleston for an internship and decided to make Charleston home and start her clothing line: Javalina.

How did your line get it's name? A Javalina is an animal found in the Southwest, my grandfather actually use to hunt them. They are a mix of cute and ferocious, which goes with my style.

If you could pick a trend for 2012 what would it be? I need more slacks in my life, so I'd pick that.

Where do you go to be inspired in Charleston? I like to take car rides down Highway 17 towards Savannah. The landscape, the houses, it's sorta my style.

Favorite Charleston Hangout? D'ellasadro's

What's on your iPod? Adele, The Kills, The Dead Weather

*Mary Labberton will be showing Wednesday Night at the Emerging Designer competition. Best of luck Mary!
