The Post and Courier reports that 2009 proved to be the most successful year in the Charleston area bus system's (CARTA) history.

CARTA recorded a grand total of 4,039,773 trips for the year, that's .23 more than ridership in 2008. While other public transportation systems around the country hiked up fares and reduced service hours, CARTA did neither of the above, attracting both new riders and holding onto regulars through a touch economic downturn.
