Economic impact of cruise ship business in Charleston measured at $37 million

A study by College of Charleston researchers for the State Ports Authority says that cruise ship passengers and crews will generate $37 million in economic activity in the Charleston area during 2010.

Two big caveats though: First, this is obviously an estimate; second, the number is based on "multiplier" effect and actual direct spending is estimated at about $500,000.

Though cruise ships are a very small amount of local port business and tourism, they are though vital as they are often first-time visitors that tend to visit more the classic tourist attractions.
