Union gives port cost-cutting measure a thumbs down

Members of International Longshoremen's Association in Charleston have rejected a proposal by Maersk to reduce costs.

Maersk, the world's biggest shipping line, accounts for a quarter of Charleston port container traffic. The company has been looking to cut costs, and has said unless it can find a way to save money when using the union ILA members, it will switch to different terminal in Charleston, one that doesn't use union labor.

Car makers, and ports, union labor is coming under more and more fire during the economic crunch.

Earlier this year, Maersk moved to close their Charleston call center.
