Human remains found in sunken car

Police found human remains in the trunk of a car Thursday in an undisclosed body of water in Mount Pleasant, and authorities think the whole thing could be related to an old missing persons case, but they aren't saying much else. Divers found the car, and the remains, after a tip about a three-year-old missing persons case led authorities to the boat landing.

Also, it's unclear whether it was a body or a skeleton in the trunk, as a couple of reports differ on that point. What is certain, though, is that it will take a while to identify the remains, and a forensic pathologist has been brought in to help.

From The Post and Courier:

Divers located the vehicle Wednesday afternoon at a boat landing after investigators, along with Mount Pleasant police, learned more about an "individual reported missing some years ago" by a girlfriend, (Charleston County Sheriff Al) Cannon said.

She told investigators the man could have skipped town or that he could have been the victim of a crime, Cannon said.

Coroner Rae Wooten and Cannon said no one has identified the remains as male or female.

A forensic anthropologist is assisting in the "tedious and time-consuming endeavor" of positively identifying the remains, Wooten said.

From Live 5 News:

Sheriff Al Cannon says divers found the car last night, but waited until this morning to pull it out of the water.

The Sheriff's Office is not disclosing the boat landing where the remains were found. Cannon is also not ready to talk about the missing man, but says a woman reported her Mt. Pleasant boyfriend missing several years ago.
