The Sons of the Confederate Veterans groups is pushing for Berkeley County schools to recognize Confederate Memorial Day on May 10 as a holiday.

From 2001 to 2007 schools closed for the holiday, but last year's holiday fell on a weekend, so school was not cancelled.

Wade Cheney of the Sons of the Confederacy insists this day be recognized by schools even if it falls on a weekend; schools would be closed the previous Friday or the following Monday.

Obviously, this has ruffled some feathers. Head on over to The Post and Courier for the story.

Also, State Senator Robert Ford has been pushing to mandate that the day be a paid holiday for state workers.
