Update January 10, 2012: With all our gushing over the sportswriter nominations in our first report, we overlooked the sportscaster nominees.

Then it stands to reason that local sportscaster Allen "The Bad Boy" Smothers has been awarded the South Carolina Sportscaster of the Year award. Grand Strand Sports Report has all the details.

Smothers made an appearance on our site's comment sections regarding the minor controversy over Grand Strand Sports Report breaking the Joe Moglia story. See that here.

First Report: The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association announced their finalists for 2011 and Terry Massey of GrandStrandSportsReport.com was the only South Carolina sportswriter nominee that is not employed by a traditional newspaper.

Terry is nominated for South Carolina Sportswriter of the Year. In fact, he is one of very few nominees on the entire ballot that isn't a part of a newspaper, TV, or radio station. The full ballot of NSSA nominees is here. That's not to say Terry doesn't know his away around the newsroom.

Massey spent nearly 14 years at The Sun News as a Sports Columnist until he went freelance in 2009. Earlier this year, Massey teamed up with local sportscaster and web developer Tyler Watkins and started working on GrandStrandSportsReport.com. The site has been going gangbusters since it launched.

It's also worth noting that golf columnist Alan Blondin of The Sun News was nominated as well. Of the four total South Carolina sportswriter nominees, two of them are from Myrtle Beach.  Winners are determined by votes from the NSSA membership. Good luck to both of you!
