For what feels like the first time in ages, the state's license plate is in the news for something that isn't too controversial: the new standard-issue S.C. tag is coming out. And if you have the old plate, you'll be getting the new one when you next pay your taxes. The new tag will cost you around $24.
Are the new plates a subtle tribute to my alma mater Clemson? Perhaps.Of course there was all that silliness about the "waxing" moon on the plate. But the symbol likely stems from the gorget. All of which leads to the-man-on-the-street response of: It's a license plate, get over it.
If you've got a question about the new tags the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles has extensive information online. But, more than likely, if you just pay your car taxes and make sure your address is current, all will be well.
Enjoy your new tags, and maybe remember the good old days. And, say goodbye to "Smiling Places. Beautiful Places," finally.
