Update September 10, 6 p.m.: With his Democratic challenger having raised some $400,000, Wilson is firing back calling for his own set of donations to counter the "liberal attacks."

Update September 10, 1 p.m.:

Joe Wilson has held a press conference where he has backed off the idea of being sorry for his actions, saying that the Republican leadership "wanted me to contact the White House and say that my statement were inappropriate." That phrasing is at odds with Obama's acceptance of Wilson's apology made last night. Obama said he accepted it as it was done "quickly and without equivocation."

Yesterday's address by President Obama on healthcare proved to be far more interesting in the Lowcountry than one would have expected.

First off, there was a show of support for reform at a rally in Marion Square; NBC News 2 was there and has a nice video.

Read more stories on this subject in our healthcare topic page. And while, the speech's long term implications have obvious impacts, an outburst by U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson is drawing more negative attention to the Palmetto State.

Politico quoted House Majority Whip (and Charleston-are representative) Jim Clyburn as saying "Joe Wilson took our state's reputation to a new low. I thought Mark Sanford had taken it as low as it could go, but this is beyond the pale."

And the comment by Wilson has already proven to be a hinderance by infusing his challenger, Rob Miller, with more than $50,000 in donations after the remark was made. -- Wilson defeated Miller in 2008 54% to 46% of the vote.

The outburst by Wilson came after Obama said that the healthcare plan would not cover illegal immigrants. Something that multiple fact checking groups have agreed with the president's view on.

Wilson represents part of the Columbia area down through Beaufort County.
