CrossFit Mt. Pleasant Moves into New Facility, Expands Offerings

CrossFit Mt. Pleasant has experienced tremendous growth since opening in July 2010 and on March 1 will move into a new space, making it the largest CrossFit facility in Mount Pleasant. The new 10,000-square-foot facility is located at 3400 Turgot Lane within the Park West subdivision on Highway 17 North.

Independently owned by Tina Whetzel, CrossFit Mt. Pleasant combines nutrition, exercise and recovery in a program that optimizes all three. CrossFit has been gaining in popularity in recent years. The Charleston area is home to 13 CrossFit “boxes” as they are called, and there are more than 4,500 CrossFit affiliate facilities worldwide.

CrossFit itself is defined a “broad, general and inclusive.” It is a core strength and conditioning program that prepares athletes for any physical task. The ultimate CrossFit formula is a regimen of constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity in a communal environment that leads to health and fitness.

In addition to Whetzel, CrossFit Mt. Pleasant has six Level 1 trainers and trainers holding CrossFit specialty certificates in Endurance, Striking and CrossFit Kids programs. A number of group fitness class times are available. Trainers work closely with athletes to ensure movements are done properly. New CrossFit athletes as well as those new to a fitness program are given alternative, scaled movements and then they progress to more challenging movements as their fitness and skill level improves.

“I’m thrilled by the fact I get to help people live better lives every day,” Whetzel said. “CrossFit Mount Pleasant is truly a family atmosphere where athletes encourage and motivate each other daily. Our growth in the last two years has been amazing and I can’t wait to bring even more athletes into our new facility and encourage our local community to live healthy, active lives.”

CrossFit Mt. Pleasant will host a grand opening celebration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at 3400 Turgot Lane. CrossFit workouts will be offered every 30 minutes from 10:30 a.m. to noon. They are free and open to anyone. An official ribbon cutting will be at 10 a.m. There also will be health-conscious exhibitors, a jump castle for the children and refreshments.

As part of its grand opening celebration, CrossFit Mt. Pleasant will donate half of any new first-month membership from March 1 to April 30 to the Center for Women.

CrossFit Mt. Pleasant offers a variety of class times, including 5 a.m., 6 a.m., 7 a.m., 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
