A surge of arctic air Wednesday will push temperatures below freezing for the first time this year and could break some overnight low records, according to forecasters with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C.

Area residents can prepare for the colder weather by planning ahead for outdoor activities for themselves and their pets, and checking that their heating sources are operational and safe, officials said.

“As the temperature drops back into the 30s, the fire department urges citizens to be careful and follow some simple safety tips when using space heaters and other supplemental heating sources,” said Brian VanAernem, Horry County Fire Rescue spokesman. “Any shift away from the exclusive use of central heating presents an increased possibility for fire.”
