Grand Strand officials have tentatively agreed to a 23-mile traffic loop that would operate overnight during Memorial Day weekend.

That loop would route drivers from George Bishop Parkway to Waccamaw Boulevard, which runs next to U.S. 501, onto S.C. 31 heading north to Grissom Parkway south, then onto U.S. 17 Bypass and down 29th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach police Chief Warren Gall said.

The loop would be in effect from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through at least Sunday of the holiday weekend, but police could institute the loop at other times of day if necessary.

“It would be from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. unless we have a complete breakdown,” Gall said. “It would have to be something real substantial [to implement] the loop at other times.”

Gall presented the smaller version of an originally proposed 40-mile loop Monday to a task force of Grand Strand and state law enforcement officers assembled to get control of crime during Memorial Day weekend.
