Myrtle Beach seeking to recoup more admissions tax money from the state

Myrtle Beach is looking to recoup more of the admissions tax collected by the state at Broadway at the Beach attractions and the new sports center.

The state charges a 5 percent tax on admissions to attractions in South Carolina. Myrtle Beach automatically gets a fourth of that money back to be spent supporting tourism. But while the city could be getting more back from the state, the rates at area attractions will not go up as a result, Myrtle Beach City Manager John Pedersen said.

Myrtle Beach City Council recently approved an ordinance that will create the Myrtle Beach Sports Center/Broadway at the Beach Development District, which could allow them to get another fourth of the 5 percent collected through the Tourism Infrastructure Admissions Tax Act.
