First reporting: With music, a fish fry, and history the 8th annual Lands End Woodland River Festival will be held this weekend out at Lands End.
The dates are Friday, August 31, from 5 p.m. with a fish-fry and local entertainment and Saturday, September 1, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with singers, dancers, musicians, and storytellers. There will be craft vendors and food vendors offering a variety of hand-made crafts and Lowcountry cuisine.
The festival is meant to be a community celebration of Gullah ancestry and traditions of the people of St. Helena Island through music, storytelling, performances, crafts, and food that surround the history of the Lands End Woodland property.
The event is free and food baskets and dinners will range from $5 to $10.
The property is located just off of Lands End Road (Lands End Woodland Beach Drive), six miles south of Penn Center on St. Helena Island.

The property would leave a legacy of which Freeman's great-grandfather, Dennis Freeman, would be proud. Dennis was born a slave on Tombee Plantation in 1850. After being emancipated, he joined the Navy in 1866, and in the 1920s, he and 46 other men pooled their money to purchase 328 acres of waterfront and hunting property that formed the Lands End Woodland Club.
