Wren is bringing in two groups of well known Lowcountry storytellers for a classic dinner of our region along with a good bit of lore. 

On Wednesday, September 22, the Lowcountry Storytellers and Backporch Storytellers of Charleston will be at the restaurant sharing their oral literature about their lives, Gullah culture, the South, and the Lowcountry.

Offered for dinner is a selection of fried chicken or fish, dirty rice, green beans, cornbread, and desert. Yes, quite classic Lowcountry.

The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and costs $30. Make reservations by calling (843) 524-9463. 

Wren is at 210 Carteret Street in downtown Beaufort.

The Lowcountry Storytellers were created by Cora Newcomb and Yostie Ashley in 1998. Members of the Lowcountry Storytellers have been featured at The National Storytelling Conference, Palmetto Bluff Of Bluffton, Story Fest in Columbia, Charles Town Landing in Charleston, the Westin of Hilton Head Island, Dataw Island, and many libraries, schools and colleges throughout the Southeast.

The Backporch Storytellers of Charleston were organized in 1987 under the leadership of the late “Tita” Heins and Michael Leonard, formerly with the Charleston County Library. The group began meeting on the back porch of Mrs. Heins’ home, thus deriving the name. The Backporch Storytellers have been featured at the Old Exchange Building, the annual ghost walks of Charleston, Summerville, and Folly Beach, Creative Spark, first night of Charleston, Tellebration, Middleton Place At Christmas, Spoleto, The Berkeley County Museum, Conventions, And Coffee Shops, Etc.

• Karen Stinson—Karen comes from a family of storytellers. She is a media specialist At Ladson Elementary, And Tells A Variety Of Stories For All Ages.
• Barara “Yostie” Ashley—Puppeteer. Resides In Hilton Head, Sc Where She Creates Many Of The Puppets She Uses To Entertain Children And Adults. She Also Performs And Conducts Educational Workshops.
• Margie Clary—Storyteller, Teacher, And Published Author Of Five Books, Who SpecialIzes In Southern Folk Tales. Citadel ProfesSor Who Teaches Courses In Storytelling.
• Mary Smith—Retired Elementary School Teacher From Summerville Sc Who Used StoryTelling In Her Curriculum To Change The Whole Language Approach To Reading. She Particularly Likes To Tell Folk Tales, True Stories, And Ghost Tales.
• Echo Wade—A Retired Librarian, Is A “Kentuckolina” Storyteller. Kentucky Roots Run Deep In This Gal Who Was Reared An Army Brat. She Tells Native American, Appalachian, And Uncle Remus Stories, And Folk Tales From All Over The World.
• Cora Newcomb—Her Life Reads Like A Modern-Day Action Novel; Her Stories Reflect Her Lowcountry Beginnings, Along With Inspirational Stories, HisTorical Tales, And Ghost Tales That Make The Imagination Burn.
• David Baxley—A (True Life And Tall Tales) Storyteller For All Ages. You Will Be Entertained And Enlightened. He Will Make You Laugh Out Loud And You Will Cry—Always Wanting To Hear More.
• Travis Godley—Born In The Eye Of A Hurricane And Raised In The Sc LowCountry, He Spent 25 Years Traveling Around The Globe As A Management ConSultant Hearing Stories Everywhere He Went. His Favorite Stories Are From His Rambunctious Childhood Being The OldEst Of Six Children, And countless numbers of aunts and uncles with stories to share.
