Beaufort County students are joining a statewide movement to walk and bike to school on Wednesday, March 7, along with parents, teachers, and community leaders as part of South Carolina Walk to School Day.

The even aims to promote safer routes for walking and biking, and emphasize the importance of increasing physical activity for children.

Nine district schools are participating: Beaufort Elementary, Beaufort Middle, Bluffton Elementary, Hilton Head Island Middle, M.C. Riley Elementary, Mossy Oaks Elementary, Port Royal Elementary, Red Cedar Elementary and Robert Smalls Middle schools.

Wednesday’s statewide events are a spring version of the International Walk to School Day held each October.

The events also emphasize pedestrian safety, reduced traffic congestion, and better connections between families, schools and the broader community.
