As we told you last month, the Beaufort County School District has approved plans to add two Montessori classrooms at Beaufort Elementary School, creating another school choice program there.

In light of that, the school district has scheduled a meeting at the school at 6 p.m. Feb. 10 in an attempt to offer parents more insight on what the new Montessori program will be all about.

The district sent out this release today explaining the Montessori system;

Montessori is a hands-on, discovery approach to learning which allows students to work individually or within small groups at their own pace.  Teachers are trained to nurture each child's curiosity, creativity and imagination in multi-aged classrooms that foster cooperation rather than competition. Other cornerstones of the Montessori philosophy are respect for others and the environment and the acceptance of responsibility for one's own learning. 

Parents who can't make it out to the Feb. 10 meeting can call the school at 322-2600 to speak with principal Jennifer Morillo. 

So far plans are to add two Montessori classrooms to Beaufort Elementary, serving first- through fifth-graders.

The district has said additional classrooms may be added if the program is deemed a success.
