After the controversy that followed the Marsh Tacky Run over who decides what horse is a marsh tacky and which is not, The Island Packet's Allison Stice has followed up with a profile about who controls the "marsh tacky" name and the cultural and Gullah background that surrounds the Spanish-descended horse breed.

Update December 1: After the debate widened and the 2013 installment of the Marsh Tacky Run was called off, The Island Packet editorial staff has followed up with some harsh words.

The paper laments that paperwork contributed in large part to the cancelation of an event that celebrates the hard times the Gullah people and adhoc background of the marsh tacky bread.

In part:

The entities that brought the public this popular event should take a deep breath, look at what has been lost and try again to celebrate the marsh tacky. They should remember why the race was created in the first place. It was not to be the Kentucky Derby. It was to celebrate a lovable symbol of the pluck it has taken to survive in the Lowcountry. They should regroup to address logistical challenges, accept compromise and let the dear little horses again have their day in the sun.
