Photo: Building Beaufort's Waterfront Park

The image above captures the construction of Beaufort's Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park under construction.

It was taken by Charles "Charlie" Brown, grandfather of local Stephen Murray. Murray couldn't recall the specific date is was taken, but suggests it was taken in 1977.

The date is consistent with the construction of the park that started in 1975 and the park opened in early May 1979.

As can be seen in the photo, the park converted downtown's row of wharfs and waterfront business into 7 acres of park land by first building the retaining wall and filling in the area.

Little known is that the outer portions of the park are not solid all the way down but merely landfill atop piers with water beneath.
