Massive tire pile found, removed on St. Helena Island

The tire pile dates back some 50 years.

Old discarded tires are specifically called out as an item that "collect water and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes", so when the Beaufort County Department of Mosquito Control spotted some 80 tons of tires piled up on a St. Helena Island property, there was understandable concern.

But that was in December, fast-forward to today and cleanup is nearly done -- The Island Packet has the story and a photo of the tire pile; get both here.

WTOC 11 also offers up a video report.
