Fires burn across region as heat, dry weather persist

Yesterday we really felt the brunt of smoke in the area, and while Beaufort remained fire-free, a number of other fires sprung up.

- At Hilton Head Plantation, a fire burned about an acre of wooded area on Tuesday afternoon.

- In Charleston, a 23-acre fire burned on Johns Island, shutting down Main Road, and a small brush fire was doused off I-26 near Ridgeville.

- Down near south Georgia, a 500-acre fire spread near the coast in Camden County.

- A 45,000-acre fire continues to burn in North Carolina — it started May 4.

- And more than 300 fires are going in Florida, with one having burned more than 1,200 acres.

So, remember, it's very dry out there, and don't burn anything — and if you do, be sure to keep an eye on it, stay away from trees, and keep the hose handy.
