Beaufort City Council proposes change in docking hours

Beaufort City Council discussed a proposal Tuesday, May 11, which would prohibit boat owners from docking their vessels from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and the temporary docking area.

Concerns arose after local authorities started noticing that the dock, which runs about 100 to 150 feet in length, was being used by some as a permanent home for owners' boats, causing congestion in the area and inconvenience for those who intended to use the area as it is designed.

Mayor Billy Keyserling believes that by implementing the rule, it would prevent such violations because officials would be able to enforce the rules with ease. As it stands now, the current closing time for the temporary dock is 1 a.m.
