Update January 28: Council chairman Weston Newton will have some competition for the seat by fellow republican and council electee Jerry Stewart.

The Island Packet has a profile of Stewart's entrance; take a read here.

They'll be facing off for the GOP nomination for District 120 in the June 12 Republican primary.

First reporting: Beaufort County Council chairman Weston Newton has officially announced his candidacy for the new South Carolina State House Seat 120.

This seat was created during last year's redistricting due to a big population jump in Beaufort County over the past decade — the district hooks from U.S. 278 as it leaves Hilton Head through Bluffton, up S.C. 170 and into Laurel Bay, you can see a map here.

"I look forward to offering to be of assistance, to be a member, to be a team member, of the delegation representing the lowcountry of South Carolina," said Newton.

The general election will take place November 6th.
