Richard Burkhart began his career as a photojournalist with the Savannah Morning News in 2000. Through his professional experience as a staff photographer, shooting weddings and completing freelance assignments he’s honed his skills as a photographer and built a diversified portfolio.

Mr. Burkhart will lead a course at the Technical College of the Lowcountry in May that provides participants with the skills to edit their digital work, weed out weak images and present their photographic vision through a portfolio. “The course appeals to a wide range of individuals,” says Burkhart “from those seeking to break into a commercial opportunity to those wanting to create a gallery show from a collection of nature images, to a family member wanting to chronicle a host of family occasions.”

The portfolio course focuses on creating and enhancing one’s photographic style, evaluating images for inclusion in a portfolio of work and the principles associated with building a portfolio. As well it includes weekly photo assignments with open critique sessions.

Build a Photography Portfolio is a six week course offering beginning May 26th continuing through June 30th on Thursdays at TCL’s New River campus.  The cost to attend this course is $159 per person.

Richard Burkhart relocated to Savannah from North Carolina to complete his degree in photography from the Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD).  He then continued his studies at SCAD to complete a Masters in Fine Arts.  At the Savannah Morning News his daily assignments range from enterprise and breaking news to features and sports.  Currently he works with designers at the newspaper on photo illustrations and produces video, slideshows and photo galleries for the news website.  For several years he has been the lead sports photographer and has worked closely with the sports editor and reporters to plan upcoming coverage, special projects and online content. Richard has also received numerous photo and illustration awards from the Georgia Press Association and the Georgia Associated Press for Spot News, Sports Feature and General News.
