Human Trafficking Survivor and Author Will be Keynote Speaker at Women's Empowerment Conference

 

 

The 2011 Women’s Empowerment Conference will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m at the Technical College of the Lowcountry in Building 12 (Health Sciences Building), 921 Ribaut Rd.  The conference provides an opportunity for local agencies and health professionals to participate in empowering the women and teenage girls of the Lowcountry through health, spiritual and self-empowerment education.  It is anticipated that at 250 women from a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds will be attending. 

The keynote speaker for the conference will be Human Trafficking Survivor and Author, Theresa Flores, who at age 15 was forced against her will into commercial sexual exploitation.  Charleston Cardiologist Dr. Marian Taylor will lead a special session on heart disease in women. 

Conference attendees will be able to choose additional sessions from an impressive line-up of presenters including Elizabeth Millen, Editor and Publisher of Pink magazine.

Girls between the ages of 13 and 18 are invited to participate in the Teen Conference which will offer appropriate educational workshops and activities at the same time. 

Complementary continental breakfast and lunch will be served to all attendees.  The Beaufort Memorial Hospital Mobile Wellness Unit will be available to do free blood glucose and blood pressure screenings, breast exams (screening mammograms), and skin cancer tests.  HIV testing will also be available through ACCESS Network.  Hemoglobin A1C and Cholesterol screenings will be available for $10.00 each; fasting is required.
