New span of J.E. McTeer Bridge proves popular for exercisers

Bridges are usually quite popular with runners, but the new span of the J.E. McTeer Bridge between Port Royal and Lady's Island is proving popular with a harder to capture demographic: more leisurely walkers and baby carriage pushers.

Much like the popular pedestrian path on the Cooper River Bridge in Charleston, the  McTeer bridge's divided pedestrian path is drawing exercisers who want a good path, a view, and an overt feeling of safety.

The Island Packet has a report on the trend; read it here.

It's more evidence that investing in pedestrian and alternative-transportation routes pays dividends — and it's hoped that Beaufort's rail-to-trail plan will follow suit.
