Folly Boat gets a fresh canvas

After 13 years of paint-overs, the five-inch thick layers of paint and messages finally started crumbling off the Folly Boat — so the city stepped up and stripped off the excess paint to give the iconic boat a new canvass, and to keep the paint out of the marsh.

The boat washed up in the spot when Hugo hit in 1989 and no one ever claimed it. Thus, in typical beach fashion, everyone started painting it year after year until a new tradition was born. Read more about the boat on
