Starting today, a collection of rarely displayed paintings of a Civil War-era Charleston painted by a Confederate soldier is available through an online Museum of the Confederacy exhibit.

The exhibition's launch culminates a $25,000, ten-year-long effort to conserve and then display the paintings. All 31 paintings by Conrad Wise Chapman will be displayed, including a stunning rendering of the submarine H.L. Hunley that was completed in December 1863. The paintings are a mere 10 by 12 inches, but are impressive despite their small stature.
