Update June 1: The Charleston City Paper has followed up and says you can stock up on a whole lot of gelato on the cheap to help cary you through the long hot summer. Take a read.

Update May 28: We've just heard the probable replacement will be a local bagel shop with lovely homemade bagels. Let's hope it pans out.

First reporting:

The George Street staple, Gelateria Modica, is closing June 7.

The reason for the closure is that the shop simply isn't bringing in enough money to support the owners' needs, I learned after making a quick call to the family-owned gelateria and dessert shop.

Thanks for the good times and gelato happy hours, you shall be missed!

After June 7 if you still find yourself craving gelato, you can head over to Paolo's Gelato Italiano at 41 John Street.

But, until then, head on down to Gelateria Modica at 41 A George Street, downtown.
