In a recent study conducted of the 300 largest counties in the country by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Horry County came in last on the list of weekly salaries.
Workers in Horry County take in an average of $534 per week compared to the national average of $935 per week. That is about a 43% difference. Some may say that we, in South Carolina, enjoy a lower cost of living so it doesn't affect us as much. However, according to city-data.com, Horry County scores an 87.8 on their cost of living index. While lower than the national average, the difference is only by 12.2 points. One starts to see a great divide.
There may be hope for Horry County residents in the prospect of new, higher paying jobs in aviation, manufacturing, and technology. Some of those jobs may be upon us soon thanks to the International Technology and Aerospace Park (ITAP). The first part of the project will be complete in November.
Moreover, Brad Lofton of the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation (MBREDC) has been tapped to bring 500 high paying jobs to the area in an 18-month time span.
