This Week Around Walkers Woods is a community column written for the neighborhood of Walkers Woods, but pertains to the entire Carolina Forest community.
Hello, neighbors. Once again, I want to start by congratulating the Carolina Forest Panthers for their 68 point shut-out against Kingstree. That’s a bigger margin than Georgia’s win over the Chants. Our boys are on fire! Let’s extend that winning streak to four against North Myrtle Beach this Friday. Don’t forget that the Civic Association needs plenty of volunteers to serve a pre-game dinner to the Panthers later this fall. Please shoot me an email if you can help.
In the September 8th column, I mentioned that there had been three police reports filed for thefts in Walkers Woods. I was asked by a couple of neighbors why I don’t include the street names. That’s a good question, and I want to make sure everyone understands why I don’t include that information.
I signed up to receive daily police reports from HorryCounty.org, which is a free service available to everybody. The street names are included in the reports, but not the full address. When a crime occurs in Walkers Woods, I want everyone to know so we can be vigilant. The street where it occurred is really not important, because we all need to stay alert. Our POA president asked me to announce that the waterfalls at the Walkers Woods main entrance are functional again. The board put a lot of hard work into this project, and special thanks go to Warren Miller and Alec Parnell for volunteering their time and efforts.
Through the communication over the waterfalls, I inadvertently found out that the board has a new member, of which I was previously unaware. Joe Fazio was appointed to replace Bill Goetz over three weeks ago. I asked both the board president and our property manager to be sure to inform the membership when there are changes. We need to know who the directors are.
I have known Joe for several years. He has contributed a lot to our community on the Architectural Standards Committee. Thanks for your service, Joe.
Horry County will conduct mosquito spraying in the Carolina Forest area this week, weather permitting. Aerial spraying is conducted in the evenings, usually between 7pm and dusk. Ground operations take place from 7pm to 11pm.
The chemicals used in the spraying are approved by the EPA and pose minimal risk to people and pets. Individuals with asthma or other respiratory illness may wish to stay indoors with windows and doors closed during spraying. In addition, homegrown fruits or vegetables should be washed, scrubbed and/or peeled before eating. If you have any concerns or complaints, you can contact the department of Horry County Mosquito & Spraying at 915-5174.
Driving past the site of our future library and recreation center, one can see how much progress has been made over the summer. I checked in with our county officials to find out if the planned opening dates are still on schedule.
Brent Taylor with Horry County Parks & Recreation told me they are planning to open the recreation center in December or January. He said, “We are staffed for the building and look forward to serving the people of Carolina Forest.”
Clifton Boyer, Horry County Libraries Director, told me he is projecting the Carolina Forest Library to open in July 2012, but only if Horry County Council approves his budget for the next fiscal year. Clif said that budget will contain funding for the needed positions in The Forest. He said, “County Council has not communicated anything to me about whether that would be approved or not. I obviously plan to request the positions but ultimately council makes the decision whether or not to approve.”
