In celebration of her 100th birthday, Charleston’s resident big band presents a program dedicated to one of the quintessential and most-celebrated singers of jazz, Billie Holiday. Holiday’s highly stylized performances quickly set her apart from traditional jazz singers as she began to revolutionize the art of jazz, blues and pop singing, refusing to compromise her artistry for either the song or the band with which she performed. Holiday contributed without restraint to the jazz idiom, delighting jazz lovers to this day with the intense, personal feeling attributed to her vocal style. Maestro Charlton Singleton leads the Charleston Jazz Orchestra and CJO Featured Vocalist Leah Suárez in an exceptional program recognizing the distinct and extraordinary contributions of “Lady Day” to jazz and other genres.
