From coiling pine needles into baskets, to handmade candles, clay beads, to bird houses, the Family Artisan Series will offer a variety of Saturday classes starting December 1 and running to January 5.
The classes will be held at Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel (843-889-8898) and cost $10 per participant, or $8 for Charleston County residents.
Saturday, Dec. 1 - Pine Needle Baskets 10-noon: Turn the needles from our native Longleaf Pine into a beautiful and useful work of art. As we coil and weave we will discuss ecology, historical uses, and the decline of Longleaf Pine forests. Course #28919
Saturday, Dec. 8 - Taper Candle Dipping 10-noon: Make hand-dipped candles under the oaks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. We'll use beeswax and other natural materials as we discuss the history of the site. Course #28891
Saturday, Dec. 15 - Fire and Clay 10-noon: Since the dawn of time, humans have been captivated by the beauty of both fire and jewelry. Warm yourself by the fire and learn how to turn lumps of clay into decorative beads. Course #28892
Saturday, Jan. 5 - Gourd Bird Houses 10-noon: Historically, this fascinating plant has been used for many things, including musical instruments, vessels and bird houses. Paint a gourd into a beautiful bird house as we learn more about these fantastic fruits. Course #28890
