The off-season is here, kids are back in school, the tourists are (mostly) gone, days are getting shorter, and the official start of fall will be upon us soon. So what's a local to do in the doldrums of winter?
We, at TheDigitel, hate to hear the phrase, "there's nothing to do here," but in the fall around the beach that phrase can ring true at times. So why not keep busy with some classes around town? Why not learn a new skill or get better at doing whatever that thing is you like to do?
WBTW News Channel 13 has a nice write-up and video featuring two great local businesses aimed at folks who want to learn the arts (culinary or the painting kind). The first is Wine and Design, an art class with a twist, they supply the canvas, brushes and paints and you BYOB.
via Wine and Design's website:
"Bring your own bottle of wine (or beverage of choice) and enjoy an unforgettable evening filled with friends, fun and fabulous art! You supply your cocktails, and we’ll supply the rest."
The second business listed is Kitchen Capers, a cooking class that supplies all you need (and wine) that'll teach you to cook a great meal

Our goal at Kitchen Capers Cooking school is to share our passion with fellow "foodies", encourage new chefs young and old to develop new techniques, all while making new friends and having a wonderful time.
Head over to WBTW for their feature to learn more about these two local businesses.
We've gone ahead a picked out a few other options for all you board Myrtle Beach locals to pick from.
Sure it's September and nearly "officially" fall but it's still warm out and will be for the next month or so -beach weather if you will- why not get a jump on next summer with some surf lessons from Surf City?
Surf lessons at Surf City range from $50-$60 a session and an hour and a half.

Our well-trained staff will give you the best ocean experience possible. The lesson will start with instruction in ocean knowledge, covering the tides, winds and currents. We then talk about surfing etiquette and safety [...] Before entering the water we go through some stretches to limber up, and then our instructor will show how to quickly “pop up” and find the right spot of the board to ride towards the beach [...] Once in the water, our instructors will be teaching “wave knowledge”, which wave offers the best chance of a good ride.
Another DIY style event in the area is Lowes Hardware's "Build and Grow" Saturday craft series for kids. "Build and Grow" is a free from 10 to 11 a.m. The next scheduled event is September, 22, 2012 and the project will be a building a firetruck. Check out all the details here.
Another fun thing is dance classes. We have several dance studios and classes around the Strand but we picked just one to feature. The Fred Astaire Dance Studio bills themselves as, "the premier ballroom and Latin dance studio in the Myrtle Beach area." Fred Astaire offers many different classes and many different skill levels. From Ballroom, Latin, Swing Dance and Wedding Dance they also offer private and group lessons.
It's a really good plan for a date night too...
Find Fred Astaire Dance Studios on Facebook or visit their website.
The final thing we'll suggest (for now) is Harry The Potter. Harry The Potter is a paint your own pottery studio that is great for families and another fun idea for a date night/day activity.

No matter your age or experience level. It's super easy and a ton of fun. Harry The Potter is a fun, friendly, creative atmosphere where you can create your own masterpiece.
According to their website, they accept walk-ins but they suggest that you make an appointment for parties of ten or more.
Check out Harry The Potter on Facebook too.
That's our list, what are some activities or classes you know of in the Myrtle Beach area that would be perfect to fight off the winter doldrums?
