Piccolo Spoleto has plenty of family-friendly events

If you think Charleston's famed Piccolo Spoleto Festival, May 28-June 13, isn't family friendly, think again. The monthlong festivities are chock full of events with the entire family in mind. Here's a sampling but for more information, check out their Web site

Sunset Serenade

When/Where: 8-9:30 p.m. May 28 at the US Custom House, Concord & Markets Sts., Downtown Charleston
Info: This annual outdoor Piccolo Spoleto pops concert features the Piccolo Spoleto Festival Orchestra conducted by Donald Portnoy, and soloist Nancy Lefter, mezzo soprano. The orchestra is comprised of graduating music majors from area universities, their college music professors along with some of Charleston’s finest professional, classic musicians. Program includes favorite works by American Composers, including Aaron Copland, John Williams, William Schumann and Duke Ellington

The Circus and the Pipe Organ

When/Where: 11 a.m.-12 p.m. May 29 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 405 King Street, Downtown Charleston
Info: This fanciful program is a L'Organo Special Event for the Children's Festival which will be taking place directly across the street in Marion Square.

Charleston Farmers Festival Market

When/Where: From 10AM – 4PM May 28, May 30, June 4, June 6 and June 11 and from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. May 29, June 5 and June 12 Marion Square at the corner of King & Calhoun Sts., Downtown Charleston

When/Where: 7-11 p.m. June 4 at the US Custom House, Concord & Markets Sts., Downtown Charleston
Info: Local beach bands bring the sounds and flavors of the Lowcountry to life

Sand Sculpting Competition

When/Where: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. June 5 at Isle of Palms, Front Beach, 1 14th Ave., Isle of Palms
Info: Piccolo Spoleto’s Sand Sculpting Competition is the perfect way to show appreciation for art and the environment. See what creative minds and talented hands can do with the shaping and sculpting of sand!

Bluegrass on the Green

When/Where: Noon to 4 p.m. June 6 in Marion Square, Corner of King & Calhoun Sts., Downtown Charleston
Info: Bluegrass on the Green is a local homegrown music festival that promotes local and regional folk and Bluegrass music. The event occurs in the heart of Charleston in Marion Square and will feature vendors and fun for the whole family.
